Live From the Library: Footprints Across the Planet

The fifth and final Friends-sponsored Live from the Library program for the summer was held on 7/28.  It featured Jennifer Swanson, a children’s author, teacher, and self-proclaimed science geek, talking about her book, Footprints Across the Planet

Jennifer is the author of over 50 books for children with topics ranging from science to robotics to animals.  She discussed her background, how she gets her ideas, and how all animals – no matter their size – have an impact on the planet.

She read the book and then attendees identified animals based on their footprints and clues:  giraffes, hippopotamuses, lions, penguins, bears, geese, frogs, and chickens.  Along the way, they also learned interesting facts about the animals.  For example, lions sleep 20 hours a day, and hippos can run up to 19 miles an hour.

Jennifer also discussed the differences between physical, digital, and carbon footprints.  Afterwards, children were given paper and crayons to make outlines of their footprints.  Inside the footprints, they drew their hobbies and interests.
