Even in a calm quiet place like the library, some people can feel a little anxious. The Beaches Branch Library has a free sensory kit area, where anyone can use the items to help them have a better (and calmer) library experience.
About Our Library Sensory Kits
You’ll find the Sensory Kits located at the end of the reception desk area. There are a couple of boxes filled with helpful items like noise cancelling headphones, squishies, pop-its, and more.
There is hand sanitizer and wipes to keep everything sanitized. The items are free to use and do not require checking out.
All the library asks is that you return the items when finished and wipe them down for the next person.

What Are Sensory Items?
Sensory items are objects designed to stimulate one or more of the five senses—touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell.
They include fidget spinners, stress balls, weighted blankets, textured fabrics, scented putties, and even wearable items like “chewelry.” These tools provide sensory input that can help regulate the nervous system and offer a sense of calm.
Who Can Benefit from Sensory Tools?
While sensory items were originally introduced to help individuals with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorders, their use has expanded significantly.
Children with trouble focusing in school, adults managing workplace stress, and individuals with anxiety all turn to sensory tools for support.
These items are also used in therapy settings to aid in emotional regulation and mindfulness.

How Sensory Items Promote Calm
The effectiveness of sensory items lies in their ability to provide grounding and soothing input. For example, a weighted blanket offers deep pressure that mimics the calming feeling of a hug. Tactile tools like putty or textured balls help redirect restless energy and encourage mindfulness.
By engaging the senses, these items help shift focus away from stressors and toward a more centered state of mind.
How Noise-Canceling Headphones Help
One of the most powerful sensory tools for managing overstimulation is noise-canceling headphones. These block out background noise, making them ideal for people who are sensitive to loud environments or struggle with concentration.
Whether used during a busy commute, in a noisy classroom, or even in a quiet library, noise-canceling headphones can create a personal bubble of quiet. This can significantly reduce stress levels and support focus.

A More Comfortable Library for Everyone
The Beaches Branch Library’s sensory kit area is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a more comfortable experience in the library.
By providing tools designed to engage the senses and promote calm, the library is fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy their time spent reading, studying, or simply relaxing.
When visiting the library, don’t hesitate to make use of the sensory kits available if needed. Remember to return the items after use and enjoy the peace they can bring to your library visits.
Take the opportunity to create a focused and serene atmosphere for yourself and spread the word to others who may benefit from these helpful items and not know they are readily available at the Beaches Library without the added anxiety of having to ask for them.
