What Is a Kiwanis Club and What Do They Do?
If you’ve ever spotted a sign for a Kiwanis Club in your town and wondered what it’s all about, you’re not alone. Kiwanis may not be as widely known as some service groups, but its impact is far-reaching. With clubs in communities across the globe, their mission is simple but powerful: to improve the world, one child and one community at a time.

A Club with a Cause
Kiwanis International was founded in 1915, and since then, it’s grown into a worldwide network of volunteers. What makes Kiwanis unique is its focus on kids. Members believe that serving children—whether in their neighborhoods or halfway around the world—is the best way to create lasting change.
Community Service at the Local Level
Each Kiwanis Club runs its own projects based on what the community needs most. Some might organize literacy programs, build playgrounds, or collect food for local families. Others might run fundraisers like pancake breakfasts, 5K races, or charity auctions, with the proceeds going right back into local schools, hospitals, or scholarships.
Supporting Future Leaders
Kiwanis also invests heavily in young people through leadership programs. You might have heard of Key Club (for high school students), Circle K International (for college students), or Builders Club (for middle schoolers). These groups are sponsored by Kiwanis and give students the chance to develop leadership skills while serving their communities.
Making a Global Impact
While the work starts locally, Kiwanis is also part of bigger, international efforts. One of their most famous projects is the Eliminate Project, a partnership with UNICEF to fight maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide. It’s a reminder that small communities working together can spark big changes.
All About Community
At its heart, a Kiwanis Club is all about community. Whether they’re raising funds, organizing youth programs, or pitching in at a local project (like tables for the library book sale!), Kiwanis members are united by a shared belief: service makes the world better.
